Tongues and Flames 1998

Illuminated outdoor sculpture façade
Mid-town Manhattan, New York City, USA
The Gershwin Hotel, New York

In 1996 Mr. Urs Jacob asked Lindfors to create a facade that would communicate the atmosphere and activities of his hotel The Gershwin in lower mid-town, Manhattan. Lindfors created large-size "tongues" sticking out from the different street entrances, and additional "flames" were attached to the wall above. The first tongues and flames were unveiled in 1998, and later on additional flames were added, climbing the walls of The Gershwin all the way to the roof top. In 2001 The New York Times declared Lindfors' permanent sculpture installation on the facade of the Gershwin "a new land mark in lower mid-town Manhattan".

The sculptures are welded stainless round stock and transparent fiberglass with lighting inside. To create an appropriate backdrop for the sculpture, Lindfors had the first three stories of the 13-story-high building painted bright red.
